More than a month after a suspicious fire destroyed a school portable on Arrowstone Drive, Kamloops RCMP say the investigation remains active as School District 73 continues working through insurance and replacement plans.
The April 22 blaze at Sa-Hali secondary, which broke out at approximately 2 a.m., completely destroyed a portable classroom used for physical education classes. Kamloops Fire Rescue was able to contain the fire before it spread to nearby school buildings.
In the weeks since the incident, students and staff have adjusted with minimal disruption.
Kamloops-Thompson School District spokesperson Chelsea Isenor said classes that had been using the portable were quickly moved into other available spaces within the school, allowing programming to continue while longer-term plans are developed.
The damaged structure has not yet been replaced. Current efforts are focused on working with insurance adjusters to coordinate demolition and removal of the fire-damaged portable before replacement discussions move ahead, said Isenor.
Meanwhile, Kamloops RCMP’s General Investigation Support Team, alongside Kamloops Fire Rescue investigators, continues to examine the cause and origin of the fire.
Police have previously described the blaze as suspicious and are still encouraging residents in the surrounding neighbourhood to check security or surveillance footage from the early morning hours before the fire.
“As we actively investigate, we will continue to work closely with School District 73 and KFR to learn more about this incident,” said Cpl. Dana Napier, spokesperson for the Kamloops RCMP Detachment.
