District faces budgetary woes in coming years

Strong leadership skills, a future focused mindset and the ability to work well in a team environment are among the qualities school-board trustees are looking for in their next superintendent.

An official posting for the Kamloops-Thompson School District leader — as well as a new secretary treasure — was distributed across the province and nationwide last week. Interim superintendent Mike McKay said trustees have a clear idea of who they are looking for in both roles.

“They want someone who is visionary and who is future orientated,” he said.

The goal is to have replacements for his role and that of interim secondary treasurer Harold Cull in place on Jan. 1. McKay expects a good range of quality candidates will apply from across the country and from within the school district itself.

“I’m excited about the process. This should be a desirable place, this is a desirable place, to live and lead and learn,” McKay said.

McKay stepped into his role following the sudden resignation of Rhonda Nixon, who helmed SD73 for more than four years, in late spring.

Cull joined the district earlier this year when the previous secretary treasurer was fired.
