The Westsyde Community Development Society (WCDS) is on a mission to bring a state-of-the-art skatepark to Westsyde, Kamloops — a long-awaited hub for recreation, youth engagement, and community pride.
In collaboration with Newline Skateparks Inc. the non-profit is leading a fundraising campaign to secure $35,000 this fall to complete the project’s detailed design phase. The full skatepark build is projected to cost between $500,000 and $600,000, with plans to develop a versatile and inclusive facility at Centennial Park, beside the dirt pump track and riding grounds.
According to community feedback collected from two in person workshops, held in both May and July, and through an online survey, participants expressed strong support for a skatepark that includes a mix between street and flow features and a call for family-friendly amenities like shade, furniture features, and landscaping that reflects Westsyde’s unique identity.
“This is more than just a skatepark — it’s a legacy project,” said Elisa Houchen, President of WCDS. “It’s about creating a vibrant, inclusive space where youth can ride, gather, and grow. This project will support youth and families into the future, Houchen added. We are inviting the community to help make it happen.”
To fund the design drawings, WCDS is pursuing a mix of grant applications, city support, local business sponsorships, public fundraising events and use of a fund raising campaign.
WCDS encourages donations, sponsorships, and volunteer participation. For more information, email [email protected] or follow Westsyde Community Development Society on Facebook.
